Hoi An Ancient Town – A World Heritage in Vietnam
Hoi An town is a small yet wonderful city in Quang Nam province of Central Vietnam. This is 30 km south of Da Nang city. In the year of 1999, the ancient town of Hoi An was recognized as a UNESCO’s World Culture Heritage.
Hoi An town, formerly named as Faifo or Lam Ap Pho, has a history of more than 2,000 years. It was an important seaport of the Champa Kingdom, which operated the strategic spice trades with Indonesia – Java countries from the 7th to 10th century. Later, it became an essential international seaport during the 16th and 17th centuries. The foreign influences to the town over history are discernible to these days.
The first influence is mainly regarding religions. The tradition and culture are mostly from the Champa people whose kingdom nation originally stretched from Thua Thien Hue province down to  Binh Thuan province (200 km south of Nha Trang city) – the Champa’s most likely originated from Java. The original Champa political center was Tra Kieu capital, the commercial center was Hoi An town and the spiritual site was My Son Holy Land. The Champa people’s religion was Hindu. During the 10th century, it supposedly was affected and influenced by Arab traders to Hoi An. Thus it was resulted in partly diverting to Muslims.
The second major influence was from the China. Firstly it was influenced from Chinese and Japanese traders but mostly from the running-away Ming Dynasty troops who after established a huge Chinese community in Hoi An town. The Japan and China’s architectures, culture, tradition and lifestyle are still remained until these days.
The last influence was from French colony from 19th to 20th centuries. The shipping business later moved to Da Nang city. Da Nang then became the new trading center of Vietnam while Hoi An city was a forgotten backward. Some historic experts confirm that Hoi An port lost its position of desirable trade seaport due to the filling up of the Thu Bon river mouth. Thus, the town then remained almost untouched by the changes to Vietnam over the next hundreds of years.
Peaceful life in Hoi An today
These days, the ancient town of Hoi An becomes one of the most attractive tourist destinations over Vietnam. This is a perfect combination of lifestyle, culture, history, traditional architecture and crafts such as woodworking, gardening, textile and garment, fishing, pottery… While many tourism facilities like bars, restaurants, spas, hotels, resorts have been established in surrounding areas, the Hoi An ancient town is preserved carefully and strictly.
